The thing with aluminum spool gun (mig-ish) is to sweep the welds, go fast along the seem for 3 inches, warms and clean the oxides, and then come back as fast and actually lay that 'bead' for half to one full inch, then repeat the same sweeping motion for miles if you can sustain it. It's tricky to 'master' but also, mistakes in aluminum are easily taken out with a circular saw and a steady, straight hand. Circular saws are what a grinder is in every workplace where long, continuous aluminum welds are to be performed in a modern production environment. I remember my first day on the job at ALMAC tanks and having NO IDEA about how a circular saw could even do anything worth anything with aluminum. Also, how impressed i was with the amount of beads a person can comfortably do in a shift with experience and good push-pull spool guns. It's certainly nothing easy to get good at but given a few days and having the drive to perform, the learning curve is exponentially positive once the hand and mindset are in sync with the material and process. Good job you guys, take care!

    • @gabbermaikel
      @gabbermaikel Месяц назад +1

push pull guns and a pulse mig make it A LOT easier. A push pull gun setup is so much nicer to work with then a spoolgun. And then add a pulsemig and you can get that bead perfect without having to pull all kinds of tricks.
I did some spoolgun welding with my normal mig. The trick for me was PREHEAT. Just grab a burner and get hat stuff preheated where you are going to start welding. Else the first part of the weld is going to be too cold, and then after a few inches your burning holes because you run too hot. And terminating the weld is also a thing i see a lot of people struggle with. I ran my setup in 2T mode, and ended with a few trigger taps to "crater fill". If you dont crater fill on something like this then that is where the boat is going to crack over time for sure.

When I was a teenager my dad bought a boat building company. We built medium size personal watercraft from 14’-28’. The cost was approximately $1,000 per foot including power train and interior. The hull would take approximately three weeks to turn from a pile of flat .090 aluminum into a river and ocean taming beast. We would mig the majority of the boat but the transom and the penetrations for the pump were all tig welded. Aluminum is a special treat to weld properly, always keep a chunk of brass around to use as a backer to fill in the holes you blast through the plate lol.

One of the things I (as a non-welder) have learned watching some builds on YT is to get the panels tacked in place for nearly the full build and THEN finish the welds. Of course there WILL be places where that's nearly impossible to do LOL Another thing I've learned is, if there is an option to have it fully welded before delivery TAKE IT! There is a reason the manufacturer offers to do that for you and it isn't entirely a desire to take more of your money.

on the pickup side of the jet boat turbine, weld some strips of aluminum that funnel the water into the turbine pickup slot, tho the angle of the turbulent funnel canards becomes its own problem as at speed the water will scoop better tho some will become turbulent flow as "steamed" water under the boat that "boils" because of the ratio of speed over the forward angle... 1" strip 20 inches long at a 45 degree angle creates 5 cubic inches of water scoop over the boat velocity, etc. creating a cfm ratio over speed against the known turbulent flow cavitation speed of the jet turbine... thus allowing higher prop speeds once moving, Boat NOS.

Meanwhile in Europe: If you have a light electric vehicle, that has 1000W motor, weights over 25kg/55lbs, it can go 25km/h max (15.5mph) you have to take an insurance for it. That's for most 2-wheel applications, water toys are not included yet, correct me if I'm wrong.
If it goes faster than that, and cops sees it, then it'll be less fun, of course. That 2-wheeler is now considered as a moped or a motor cycle, and there will be more payments and stuff, like "driving a motor cycle without a helmet and proper insurance and proper drivers licence"...
If you had a drivers licence for a car, they might take it from you for a month or so, just to punish you.
We have separate licences for motor cycles, cars, heavy rigs, buses etc.
    Fun stuff.

As long as it your speed didn't exceed 30mph. Now, the requirements are, 50cc or under, has to be insured, registered, road legal, lighting etc. and can't exceed 25mph. Even electric bicycles aren't exempt, if they exceed 25mph.

Yea, it's starting to really go down here. In Estonia, it's everything you said, plus starting next year you have to have insurance for your ride on mower and many other stupid thing like that. If you use it on your own land, it's fine, but as soon as you ride it onto a public road you have to have insurance or you'll get a fine.
As in, I live in the countryside and want the village road going past my yard to look nice, so I mow the sides of the road 100 meters to each direction from my house. But now I technically have to have it insured, because I cross the road with it. The road sees maybe 6 cars a day, if that. Utter stupidity.

I don't mean to be cocky but it will definitely sound like that to many people who don't have the aluminum experience i have. To me, IF the pieces were all fitting and properly cut as they were when i was working at ALMAC tanks (aluminum petrol/water/waterver tank/truck bodies), that is a couple days, maybe 4 all inclusive. First day of assembly is the hardest when you don't have any jigs, the thing has to be straight and make sense before any welding takes place... Then, assumign assembly and again, parts were properly cut to fit without trouble, a day of spool gun should be more than enough to weld everything. Third and fourth day could be combined together but they essentially consist of cleanup, not so much grinding - but that is highly subjective and depends on alot of experience and equipment used - and polishing. I can see an easy 5 days for a friend with good equipment and experience (and time, please)... BUT, hey, work is done and that's all that matters... i salute you for the achievement! So it would just draw down the capacity of the batteries in series first right? Which okay, thats what i thought it would do. I just can’t find a solution that is light enough for like a 3 hour trip in a mini jet boat.
I want it to be electric so i can go places that gas/ diesel boats can’t go. Small enough to get over debris, not be a barge when in the water, be light enough to wriggle off debris, and small enough to wiggle through small areas.
I was thinking the diesel hybrid since a loophole is that the diesel engine isn’t powering the motor, thats the generator and the electric motor would run off the batteries. Blah blah, i get it, they all flow together, but I don’t believe the law categorizes it in that way. At least this is what edison motors take is on the subject., albeit a canadian company.

i think it would be a good idea to have sort of foam insertion on this, just in case you tilt over it wont sink, flotation in all cases

Rich, I’m the only guy commenting not about the welds. I’m commenting about the buoyancy. The less weight is in the boat, the less surface area is in contact with the water, the faster the boat goes. Water has much more drag than air. So, to make the boat as fast as possible, you want it out of the water as much as possible, which means you want as little weight as possible.

pretty sure that wasn't even a thought for the old geezer who's homebuilding jet motors and sticking them on kayaks and stand up boards while ripping them through local canals lol I'm still tryin to buy a couple jets off him and the line's way to deep (not affiliated, Youngsters Jets).
But I have started spec'ing jet motors off alibaba and picking out kayaks/boards at the local kayak/board store 🙂 There are hundreds of miles of canals in Florida that were built so they could sell "waterfront" property and I realized they really don't have any equivalent of street racing as well as a LOT of very straight lines to blast lol
